Qualifications in Travel Medicine

The Faculty of Travel Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is the only one of its kind in Europe.

We're proud to be a world leader in setting the standards of care for the prevention and treatment of sickness and trauma in travellers.

As you develop in your career, our qualifications allow you to progress from a Professional Development Certificate to a Postgraduate Diploma. You can also continue your education to master's level through our partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Professional Development Certificate in Travel Medicine

  • Duration: Six months
  • Fee: From £995*
  • Qualification: Certificate

Our introductory travel medicine qualification will provide you with knowledge and understanding of travel medicine in relation to the core aspects of travel health. The course is delivered entirely online using digital modules with self-directed study. You'll have access to a tutor, who will provide guidance throughout the programme.

RCPSG Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Fee: £4,395*
  • Qualification: Postgraduate Diploma; SCQF Level 11
  • Next cohort: 6 May 2025
  • This course consists of eight postgraduate modules delivered using a blended model of residential elements and online interactive learning. If you complete the diploma you'll be eligible to join the College as a Member of the Faculty of Travel Medicine and can use the postnominals MFTM RCPS(Glasg).

RCPSG Postgraduate Diploma in International Expedition and Wilderness Medicine

  • Duration: 18 months

This course is a must for any healthcare professional seeking to participate in, or lead expeditions in extreme and challenging environments. You’ll learn to make sound clinical and situational judgements in environments and situations prone to rapid change and uncertain outcomes. Structured in conjunction with the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, the diploma offers students the opportunity to travel to challenging locations in the UK and Morocco.

On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine, you can progress to a final course of study, a master's programme offered by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). This is a 60-credit dissertation module, completed over two trimesters in a six-month period.

Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service

The Faculty of Travel Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has published its Good Practice Guide for Providing a Travel Health Service.

This new publication sets out to define the standards of care every practitioner should achieve in their practice of travel medicine for the health and safety of the international traveller.

The guidance can also be used as a self-assessment guide to identify key areas for continuing professional development or continuous quality improvement, including effectiveness, efficiency and safety of the service.

It is intended for all those providing or planning to provide travel health services, thereby improving standards of care to international travellers.

About your Dean

Professor David Ross

David Ross was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1983 and graduated in medicine from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1986. In 2012 he was appointed the Parkes Professor of Preventive Medicine and in 2014 an Honorary Queen’s Physician. He has been associated with MASTA, a travel medicine provider, circa 2005 and from 2012 has been their Consultant Medical Advisor.

David is also Chief Examiner of the Diploma in Medical Care of Catastrophes at the Society of Apothecaries and an examiner at the UK Faculty of Public Health.
